How to run a pickleball round robin

Updated 8 September 2026

To run a pickleball round robin, decide whether partners stay fixed or rotate, count your players and courts, pick a game length (11 points, win by 2, is about 12 to 15 minutes), and build a schedule where every team meets every other team once. Eight players on two courts as four fixed teams is 3 rounds and about 45 minutes. The same eight players with rotating partners is 7 rounds and about 1 hour 45 minutes, so most groups cap it at 5 rounds.

Step 1: fixed teams or rotating partners

This one decision changes the round count, the scoring and what "winner" means, so make it first.

The rest of this guide uses fixed teams. The Americano guide covers the rotating version.

Step 2: players, courts, rounds and time

With fixed teams, every round pairs the teams off, so the number of matches per round is half the number of teams (rounded down). If you have that many courts, one round is one time slot. If you have fewer courts, a round takes two or more waves.

8432245 min
10552 (one team sits)275 min

14773 (one team sits)3105 min
168744105 min
2010955135 min
24121166165 min

Two rules of thumb fall out of that table:

Step 3: choose a game length

Time per round is the number that makes or breaks the afternoon. Rec doubles to 11, win by 2, with side-out scoring takes 12 to 15 minutes including the changeover. Pick from these and announce it before the first serve:

GameTypical minutesWhen to use it
To 11, win by 212 to 15The default. Familiar to everyone.
To 15, win by 218 to 22Small fields with time to spare, or a final.
Timed, 12 minutes, rally scoring12 exactlyMany courts. Every court finishes together, so nobody waits.
To 11, no win-by-210 to 13Tight schedules. Caps the long deuce games.

If you use timed rounds, play one more rally when the buzzer goes on a tie.

Step 4: build the schedule

The classic method is the circle: write the teams in two rows, fix the first team in place, and rotate every other team one place clockwise each round. That guarantees every team meets every other team exactly once with no repeats. It is quick by hand for 4 or 6 teams and error-prone above that. PicklePairings uses the same circle method, numbers the courts, and rewrites only the unplayed rounds if a team is added or withdrawn.

Worked example: 8 players, 2 courts, fixed teams

Eight players make four teams: call them A, B, C and D. Four teams need 3 rounds, with 2 matches in each round, so both courts are full every round and nobody sits out.

RoundCourt 1Court 2
1A vs BC vs D
2A vs CB vs D
3A vs DB vs C

Games to 11, win by 2. Budget 15 minutes a round and a 5-minute warm-up: the session is done in under an hour.

Sample standings after three rounds, ranked by wins, then point differential, then points scored:

TeamW-LDiffPoints
Team C2-1+931
Team A2-1+429
Team B1-2-327
Team D1-2-1022

C and A are tied on wins, so point differential decides it. How and why that order works is in the standings and tiebreaks guide.

Odd numbers of teams

Five teams means one team sits out every round, and the schedule needs 5 rounds instead of 4 so that every team sits exactly once. The circle method handles it if you add a "ghost" team: whoever draws the ghost has the bye. Record the bye as a win with no points scored so sitting out never costs a team a place. With 5 teams on 2 courts that is 5 rounds and about 75 minutes, 15 of which each team spends watching.

Odd numbers of players are the harder case for fixed teams, because someone has no partner. Three fixes, in order of preference: recruit one more, run it as an Americano where sit-outs rotate, or let the spare player rotate in as a substitute for whichever team has the bye.

Late arrivals, no-shows and early leavers

Running the day

  1. Post the schedule on the wall by the courts, one sheet per round. Print it, or share it as text to the group chat.
  2. Call the round, name the courts, start a visible timer if you are using timed games.
  3. Collect scores at the desk as courts finish. Enter them straight away so the standings are live and arguments are short.
  4. Generate or reveal the next round only after every score is in.
  5. Post final standings, then hand out whatever passes for a prize.

A printable round sheet has a line per court with both team names and a blank for each score. PicklePairings prints one from every round and prints the standings table, so the wall copy and the phone copy always match.

Frequently asked questions

How many rounds is a round robin with 8 players?

With fixed doubles teams, 8 players make 4 teams and need 3 rounds (each team plays the other three). With rotating partners, 8 players need 7 rounds to partner everyone once, which is why most Americano sessions stop at 5 rounds.

How long does a pickleball round robin take?

Multiply rounds by about 15 minutes for games to 11, then add 10 minutes for warm-up and changeovers. Four teams on 2 courts is 3 rounds, about 55 minutes. Eight teams on 4 courts is 7 rounds, about 2 hours. If you have fewer courts than matches per round, multiply again by the number of waves.

How many courts do I need for a round robin?

Ideally one court per match in a round, which is half the number of teams. Six teams want 3 courts. You can run with fewer courts by playing each round in waves, but it doubles or triples the time, so it is usually better to cut the field or split it into pools.

What do I do with an odd number of teams?

Give one team a bye each round and add a round so everyone sits out exactly once: 5 teams play 5 rounds, 7 teams play 7 rounds. Score the bye as a win with zero points so the sit-out never costs a place in the standings.

Can a late player join a round robin already in progress?

Yes. Add the new team after the current round and regenerate only the rounds that have not been played. The late team misses whatever was already played and takes either a loss or a bye for it, which you should announce before they join.
