How to run a pickleball mixer

Updated 30 October 2026

A pickleball mixer is a social session where nobody brings a partner: players rotate so everyone plays with and against as many people as possible. It is the friendliest way to fill a few courts on a club night, welcome new members, or mix skill levels without anyone getting stuck. This guide covers the common mixer formats, how many players and rounds work, how to score it, and how to run one without a clipboard full of crossings-out.

The common mixer formats

Rotating partners (Americano style)

The most popular mixer. Every round you get a new partner and new opponents, chosen so nobody repeats a partner until they have to. Each player keeps the points their side scored, and the most points at the end wins. It is fair because everyone plays roughly the same number of games, and it is social because you play with almost everybody. See the Americano guide for the full rules.

Up and down the river (king of the court)

Courts are ranked. After each game, the winners move up a court and the losers move down, and partners split. Within a few rounds the strongest players gather on the top court. It is lively and self-sorting but less mixed, since players end up near their own level. The king of the court guide has the setup.

Paddle stacking / open play

Players put their paddles in a queue, and the next four go on whichever court frees up. Zero planning, but uneven: some people wait longer, and friends tend to stack together. The open play rotation guide compares it with app-made rotations.

Mixed doubles mixer

A rotating-partner mixer where every pair is one man and one woman. Run it with two lists and rotate one list against the other, or have the app rotate partners and swap a pairing by hand when needed.

How many players, courts and rounds?

16407 to 8
20507 to 8

Each court takes four. If the count isn't a multiple of four, the extra one to three players sit out each round, and the rotation should make sure the same person doesn't sit twice before everyone else has sat once. Seven or eight rounds of 12 to 15 minutes fills a two-hour booking. There are printable rotation charts for 4 to 16 players if you want paper.

Scoring a mixer

  • Points, not just wins. In a rotating mixer your partner changes every game, so a single win or loss says little. Totalling points over the session is fairer and keeps every rally meaningful.
  • Fixed length games. Play to 11 (win by 1 keeps rounds on time) or for a fixed 12 minutes. Timed games keep all courts finishing together.
  • Sitting out. Give a player who sits out the average score of that round, so the bench never costs anyone points.
  • Tiebreaks. Most points, then most games won, then best single game.

Running it on the night

  1. Check in. Take names as people arrive. Decide a cut-off; late arrivals can join from the next round.
  2. Post the round. Announce or display who plays where. A live link on phones saves shouting across the gym.
  3. Collect scores. Have each court report its score as it finishes, or let players enter it themselves from their phones.
  4. Next round. When every court has reported, post the next round. Keep a buffer of a minute or two for water.
  5. Wrap up. Announce the top three, share the standings, and remind people of the next session.

Mixing skill levels

A mixer works best when the gap between the strongest and weakest player is not huge. For a wide spread, either run two mixers side by side on separate courts, or use a king-of-the-court rotation so games even out on their own. Avoid hand-picking pairs; it slows everything down and someone always notices.

Choose Americano, paste the names and set the number of rounds. The app picks fair sit-outs, avoids repeat partners, keeps each player's points and shows the standings as scores go in. Turn on the live link and players can see where they play next, and even enter their own court's score. Someone late? Add them and they join from the next round.

Questions

What is a pickleball mixer?

A social session where players rotate partners and opponents every round instead of bringing a fixed partner, so everyone plays with most of the group.

How do you score a pickleball mixer?

Each player keeps the points their side scored in every game. Most points wins, then most games won. A player sitting out gets that round's average.

How many rounds should a mixer have?

Seven or eight rounds of 12 to 15 minutes fits a two-hour court booking for 8 to 20 players.

What if the number of players isn't divisible by four?

One to three players sit out each round, rotated so nobody sits twice before everyone has sat once.

Is a mixer the same as an Americano?

A rotating-partner mixer scored by points is the Americano format. Mixer is the broader name and also covers king of the court and open play rotations.
